Office of the City Manager

Message from Jaime M. Fontes

It has been an honor to serve as City Manager since May 1, 2019. I bring to the City experience as an attorney with an extensive background in land and economic development and have worked for city, county, and tribal governments in California and Arizona. It is fulfilling to work for multicultural and multilingual communities.

Our city vision is to create a sustainable economy in East Palo Alto that will ensure excellent services to our community in terms of public safety, infrastructure, housing, education, health and social services to all our citizens. At the same time, we must make sure the relentless wave of gentrification in the Bay area does not leave our citizens behind.

I am of the sincere belief that our main accomplishment this last year was the re-organizational change that was necessary to create an administrative team that is increasingly cross trained and efficiently functioning. Staff is imbued with a new sense of mission to carry out clear and realistically achievable goals and objectives recently adopted by our City Council.  Our reorganization allowed us to get ahead of this COVID-19 Pandemic since early February and institute a staffing plan that emphasized social distancing prior to being directed by the County to do so. Due to this and other staff efforts I am sure we are up to any new challenge.
